Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres
FRANCE
Foundation: 1696

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres (SPC) born in Levesville at the end of the seventeenth century, owes its existence in Chartres through the kindness of Monsignor Paul Godet-des-Marais.
In 1861, through the voice of Pius IX, it was officially recognized by the Church.
The SPC Congregation was founded by Fr. Louis Chauvet and of our first Sisters who responded to the urgent and immediate needs of the population deprived in education and care of the sick.
1696. The miserable state of the parishioners in Levesville had touched the heart of Fr. Louis Chauvet whose pastoral soul was upset. Following His Lord's example, "when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them." (Mt. 9:36) The work was enormous and the Lord's call was coming in this land of Beauce inviting for his people to participate in His work of redemption and to the proclamation of the Good News.
The Sisters of St. Paul are Sisters of Charity. "Of all the works of charity, there are none more pleasing to God nor more worthy of merit than to instruct the ignorant and to assist the afflicted." (draft of a Rule, Ch. I)
The SPC sister, who is a pediatrician, a nurse, a mathematics instructor, a kindergarten teacher or a catechist, has the duty -- in the exercise of her profession -- to evangelize the persons she encounters in her milieu. She reminds them that that God is truly worthy of love that one can go as far as to consecrate her life to him and for him. Often without a word, she announces Jesus Christ. The work matters little, so long as the Sister -- by her kindness, devotedness and forgiveness -- proclaims plainly that she lives the love of her God. << Whatever kind of work they may be engaged in, the Sisters keep in mind that their first aim in life is to further the growth of the kingdom of God.
(Excerpts from Road Towards Easter)
Today the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres are spread out in 37 countries in the 5 continents of the world.
